Meet Team PEI Curling Coaches Gie Rogers and Nancy MacPhee

Gie Rogers, Team PEI 2020, Curling

Gie Rogers and Nancy MacPhee, Head Coaches for Team PEI 2020's Curling Team, both started as program volunteers with the Charlottetown Curling program. When the need arose, they volunteered to step in to fill the Head Coaches role. When asked why they felt it is important to volunteer their time, with not only Special Olympics, but with the Charlottetown Curling program, Gie and Nancy spoke of the importance of contributing their community, and having fun. They were quick to note, however, that this was not necessarily the order of importance for their reasons for volunteering! They both speak so highly of the athletes, and what a pleasure it is to work with them. As something new for both Gie and Nancy, they are enjoying the challenge of learning, and practicing their own curling skills.

As first time National Games coaches, both Gie and Nancy are feeling a healthy mix of excitement and apprehension. This will be a completely new experience for both coaches, although one they have been preparing for. In addition to completing their required coach education, Gie and Nancy have been working closely with the Team PEI Curling athletes and their families. Last winter's Provincial Games in Miramichi were also a great learning opportunity, for both athletes and coaches.

Incorporating mental training into the training plan for Team PEI Curling is important for both Gie and Nancy, and the Curling athletes, and everyone involved agrees that success in any activity is highly dependent on the way your approach it. Mental training is helping the athletes develop a consistent approach and methods for dealing with game situations, all while helping to foster the mental discipline needed in the sport of curling.

Up until this point of the 2019 - 2020 season, Team PEI Curling's training has been focused on off ice cross training, including mental training, while waiting for the ice to be installed at the curling rink.  The entire team is chomping at the bit to get onto the ice, and to have the opportunity to put their skills, including their mental skills into practice.
