Meet Volunteer Helene Johnston

Special Olympics BC – Sunshine Coast Treasurer Helene Johnston started volunteering with SOBC after watching one of her niece’s rhythmic gymnastics performances. Seeing her niece’s joy as she completed her routine showed Johnston the importance of SOBC’s empowering programs and inspired her to get involved in her community.

Johnston will be celebrating her 10th anniversary with SOBC next year and has made many great memories during her time with Special Olympics. She says she’s had the privilege of seeing many athletes develop leadership skills, build confidence, and become active in their communities.

Johnston wants others to know that SOBC – Sunshine Coast has a great group of dedicated volunteers who work hard to support the Local’s inspiring sport programs and provide athletes with the best possible experiences.

When did you start with Special Olympics, and how did you get involved?

My Local Committee position is Treasurer and I have been doing this since 2008. I got involved in Special Olympics after seeing my niece in one of her rhythmic gymnastics performances. She loves performing and I thought while I could not help where she lived, I could help others who have special needs at home.

What has been your most memorable Special Olympics experience and what is your favourite thing about being involved with SOBC?

I have loved a lot of my experiences with Special Olympics, most of all watching the smiles and determination on the faces of the athletes as they play basketball, soccer, and rhythmic gymnastics, take part in walk-a-thons, or just have fun at one of our dances. While my position is behind the scenes, it takes a large group of dedicated volunteers to keep our athletes active, challenged, and competitive.

What would you like others to know about SOBC – Sunshine Coast?

SOBC – Sunshine Coast has a very active group of athletes and a dedicated group of volunteers to keep all our programs running smoothly. I have watched athletes grow into role models for other athletes, become active in community events, and feel like valued members in our community. In response, the general public has gained a better appreciation of our athletes and this has showed up time and again in the outpouring of support, we get from our community.
