With the support of the Government of Canada under the Canada Service Corps program, Special Olympics BC's Youth Engagement Project volunteers are creating events and initiatives to build health and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities!

Soccer Drills Series

Austin and Janko, two Youth Engagement Project leaders, ran a five-week virtual soccer drills series!

inclusion initiatives

  • Veronika Kitzul of Radium Hot Springs created a children's book about inclusionThe book shows what it really means to include, and the impact that exclusion and discrimination have on people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The book was circulated to interested schools, and the digital copy can be shared in future!

  • Vancouver's Daniel McClement (creator of SOBC Chefs) and Olivia Sullivan ran The Amazing Race to Inclusion in local schools!

Nutrition Workshop - Held Mar 25

Youth Engagement Project leader Angela ran an engaging nutrition workshop on Zoom, for people with intellectual disabilities and family and friends of all ages! Participants learned about the value of vegetables, plus simple and tasty recipes. Participants received a Sobeys gift card!

SOBC Athlete Development - Held Mar 24 and 25 

Youth Engagement Project volunteer Rojella Santos created a two-day virtual training program and webinar for young athletes with intellectual disabilities ages 9 to 22 of all levels. Participants joined a mental health advocate, nutritionist, fitness trainer, and physiotherapist to work their mind and body. 

Dance Like NoBODY's Watching - held Feb 23 and Mar 9

Vancouver's Andrea Jones invited everyone to Dance Like Nobody's Watching in fun virtual events! Participants completed a warm-up, short dance routine, and cool-down led by an SOBC coach and rhythmic gymnastics athlete. These events inspired athletes to choose dance as a form of physical activity, not only because dancing is fun, but it brings people of all abilities closer together.
