Sandra Schuffert
Special Olympics Team BC 2020 Snowshoeing Coach

When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics?

First in 2012 as a parent, when my son started as an athlete. Shortly after that, I started volunteering for some fundraising events, and for a short time I was on the Local Committee, but then realized that my passion was to spend time with the athletes. I am so inspired by each one of them and now I am an Assistant Coach for swimming, track and field, and Club Fit. I am also the Head Coach for snowshoeing.

Will this be your first Special Olympics Canada Games? If not, which other National Games were you part of and in what role(s)?

This will be my first time - so excited!

What does it mean to you to be part of Special Olympics Team BC 2020?

That I want to contribute all that I have to this team. I am committed to fostering team spirit and will make every effort to support and encourage our athletes, coaches, and mission staff. Our athletes treat each other with so much respect and I want to learn to be more like our athletes.

What is/are your goal(s) for these National Games?

More of the same as in the previous question...

What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date?

I am always touched by the volunteers at Games; they smile, encourage and support each event. One of my favourite moments was when one of my athletes got really cold (really fast) and we went to the first aid cabin to warm him up between races. The medical volunteers were very supportive, had warm blankets and everything you need to help medically, BUT it was the way they interacted with the athlete that was amazing. For the volunteers this really was an athlete, they talked about sports, the weather and the competition. And of course a lot of high fives!

What does competing at National Games mean to your athletes? (or, if this is your first National Games, competition in general)

To overcome obstacles and to feel empowered because the athletes did it!

What storylines are you excited to see develop in your Team BC sport team leading up to the National Games?

A prominent sense of humour and a growing positive attitude and confidence. A team that is respectful, inspirational and curious.

What would you say about Special Olympics to encourage someone to get involved?

Just spend some time with the athletes – the love and care that is lived will inspire you, and you don't want to go without.
