Provincial Games

Special Olympics Saskatchewan Provincial Games occurs every two years alternating between summer and winter competitions. These games serve as qualifiers for national games and an opportunity to be part of Team Saskatchewan.

Special Olympics Games are an important part of our organization’s history, identity, and athlete journey.  Our team will be working hard to rebuild our Games pathway so that athletes and District teams can once again reach towards their competitive goals. See below for a recap of the 2019 Winter Games.

Special Olympics Games Frequently Asked Questions

When will the next Special Olympics Saskatchewan Provincial Games be?

The format of the 2023 Special Olympics Saskatchewan Winter Games that were being planned in Prince Albert as been altered. The Games will no longer be happening in the traditional format of all winter sport competitions happening in one place on one weekend. The new format will consist of individual sport competitions over the course of the 2022/23 Winter.

What factors were considered in altering the format of the 2023 Provincial Winter Games?

  1.  The impact the global pandemic had on the disruption of athlete and volunteer registrations, winter sport programs operating, winter sport competitions and qualifying opportunities, and fundraising.
  2. Ensuring the safety, well-being, and meaningful sport opportunities for all athletes and volunteers.
  3. Focusing attention on local and grassroots programs as the building blocks of all of our sport training and competition preparations.

What other alterations will be made for the 2023 Provincial Winter Competitions?

  1.  Special Olympics Saskatchewan will be waiving the eligibility requirement for athletes, coaches, and volunteers to have attended a qualifying competition during the 2021/22 program year. This change is made to account for:
    1. Members who were not comfortable or able to participate the last couple of years
    2. Members who were unable to participate due to winter sport programs and winter sport competitions not operating over the last couple years.
  2. Special Olympics Saskatchewan will be waiving the requirement for athletes, coaches, and volunteers to only participate in one winter sport competition. This change is made to account for:
    1. Meaningful competition opportunities for athletes of all abilities.
    2. The decrease in coach and volunteer registrations across Saskatchewan.

Key Information for the 2023 Provincial Winter Competitions?

  1. Some of the competitions will have attendance limited and Special Olympics Saskatchewan will determine and distribute quotas. The quotas will be shared within competition details and registration information. The reasons for this are:
    1. Capacity of competition facilities.
    2. Capacity of accommodation facilities.
  2. Some of the competitions will require entry results along with athlete registration. For example, an average in bowling or times in snowshoeing events. These results can be from a competition that happens in the 2022/23 program year before the provincial competition, or can be collected during a practice (mock competition). The entry results requirement will be shared within competition details and registration information. The reason for this is:
    1. Creating meaningful competition for athletes by creating the best possible divisions.
