2024 9th Annual SOS Curling Bonspiel and Opening Eyes!

Curling Bonspiel

On January 27th and 28th, five teams came together to take part in the 9th Annual SOS Curling Bonspiel. We welcomed two teams from Swift Current, two teams from Regina, and a team from Melfort to take part in some fun competition!

The competition kicked off on the 27th at the Caledonian (Callie) Curling Club in Regina with teams eager to hit the ice. We had two draws in the morning and then everyone took a break for lunch and an opportunity to catch up with friends. Following the meal, athletes were invited to attend the Healthy Athletes: Opening Eyes Event at their hotel.

We held our first Healthy Athletes: Opening Eyes event since 2019! With volunteers ready and excited, athletes went through 10 stations to receive a comprehensive eye assessment. Following the assessments, athletes had the opportunity to go through their information with Clinical Director Nicole Maierhoffer to see if the athletes needed a new pair of prescription glasses or sports goggles. If athletes were seeing a perfect 20/20, they did not go home empty-handed, but instead with some stylish sunglasses!

Not only would we like to thank all of the athletes who showed up, but we would also like to thank Nicole Maierhoffer and all of the volunteers who came with high energy ready to help out. We would also like to thank our corporate sponsors Essilor and Safiilo who allowed our athletes to have a choice in choosing their new eyewear.

On Sunday morning, the energy was high coming from a successful first day and Opening Eyes event. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation. Starting strong with the final round-robin draw of the bonspiel, followed by the championship medal rounds, athletes, volunteers, coaches, and supporters cheered each other on. The final results were:

  1.  Team Fiedelleck (Melfort)
  2. Team Goebel (Swift Current)
  3. Team Barth (Regina)
  4. Team Nagy (Regina)
  5. Team Dickie (Swift Current)

We were fortunate enough to have Minister Gene Makowsky, on behalf of our Sponsor SaskTel, present for our final games and to have him say a few words before assisting in handing out the medals to our winners. We want to say a big congratulations to all of the athletes for an excellent weekend of curling and fun competition. Your efforts made the weekend a joy to be a part of! We also want to thank all of our coaches who took the time out of their busy schedules to come and continue to support the bonspiel and their athletes. Another thank you goes out to Denita Zacharias and Curl Regina for helping plan and sponsor the event. Finally, thank you to all of the staff at the Callie Curling Club for all of their hard work - without the contributions of everyone involved, this event would not be possible.

We can't wait to see you all again next year!
