Special Olympics Canada's volunteer Board of Directors is composed of business and sport leaders, athletes, educators and experts in intellectual disabilities from across Canada. The Board of Directors develops, implements and monitors policies that allow Special Olympics Canada to carry out its mission of enriching the lives of individuals with an intellectual disability through the transformative power of sport.

Meet the newest members of our Board:

 

Chief Charles Bordeleau, Retd.

Chair of Special Olympics Canada Board of Directors

Charles Bordeleau retired from policing in May 2019. He served his community as a police officer for 35 years and assumed the Executive Leadership role of Chief of Police for the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) from 2012 to 2019. During his tenure, he was able to build upon the successes of the OPS, implement change, build on strengths, expand public confidence, preserve fiscal health, and improve employee satisfaction.  

Nationally, he contributed to the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) as an active member where he built and fostered relationships with other police leaders and senior government officials and served as Vice-President of its Board of Directors in 2018-2019. Provincially, he was on the Board of Directors for the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) for 8 years and served as its President in 2016-2017. He also served as a member of the Major Cities Chiefs Association which represents the 69 largest cities in the United States and nine largest in Canada.

His commitment to the community extended beyond his role as a police officer and, over many years, he had the privilege to volunteer and take leadership positions on numerous community based boards.  Currently, he is Chair of the Board for Special Olympics Canada, serves on the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG) Community Cabinet, the Montfort Hospital Foundation and the Telus Community Board.  He provides professional consulting services to Executives in the area of Public Safety and Leadership.  He is married to Lynda who is a lawyer and they have one daughter.

 

Georgina Black

In her role as Managing Partner, Georgina leads a team of professionals committed to preparing Canada for a healthy, prosperous and sustainable future.  She serves on Deloitte’s global industry executive and is the Chair of the Council for ESG in Government. 

Georgina has over 25 years’ experience as a consultant, business leader, entrepreneur and volunteer.   An experienced strategist and facilitator, Georgina has a track record of working with leaders across all levels of governments, health and social care organizations and private providers to shape and drive change agendas to improve outcomes for stakeholders.  

Recognized as Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women, Georgina is a frequent speaker and panelist on the future of government and the future of healthcare.  She has recently co-authored reports on the future of Canada, reimagining seniors care in Canada and digital equity.

Georgina has served on several boards in healthcare and education and is currently serving as a Director for Special Olympics Canada and is Co-Chair of the Ridley College Campaign. She studied Political Science at McGill and is a graduate of the Institute of Corporate Directors.

 

Sandra Sanderson

Senior Vice President, Sobeys Inc.

As Senior Vice President of Marketing for Sobeys Inc., the second largest national grocery retailer and food distributor in Canada, Sandra oversees marketing across a broad portfolio of banners, including: Sobeys, Safeway, Thrifty Foods, Foodland, FreshCo, and Lawtons.  Sandra is a member of the Sobeys Inc. Executive Committee and is accountable for the organization’s banner brand strategies, integrated marketing, digital transformation, insights & analytics, loyalty program, sports partnerships and community investment.  Sobeys Inc. was named a 2020 Brand of the Year by Strategy under Sandra’s leadership.

Sandra has extensive marketing experience in leading successful brands across diverse industries.  She was Chief Marketing and Quality Officer at Walmart Canada, where she led development of the new prototype store design and the marketing campaign to relaunch fresh food.  She also launched Walmart Media Group and drove growth of Private Label through innovation. Sandra served as Senior Vice-President of Marketing at Shoppers Drug Mart, where she oversaw the growth of the Optimum program, the relaunch of Beauty Boutique and digital transformation efforts.  Sandra also held senior marketing roles at many leading organizations including Proctor & Gamble, Kraft, Coca-Cola, Canada Post, and Universal Studios.  Prior to joining Sobeys Inc., Sandra was Senior Vice President of Marketing at White House Black Market in the U.S.  Sandra currently serves on the Board of Directors for Tiary.com.

Throughout her career, Sandra has invested in giving back to the Marketing community.  She was on the Canadian Marketing Association’s Board of Directors for four years, including Vice-Chair of the Board. Sandra served as Chair of Retail Council of Canada’s Senior Retail Marketing Committee and was on the Advisory Board of the Shopper Marketing Forum and Dx3.   Sandra is a frequent speaker at industry conferences, and has judged numerous awards including: CMA Awards, The Cassies, Media Agency of the Year, Shopper Innovation Awards and the Marketing Hall of Legends.

Sandra was named Marketer of the Year in 2020 by the Canadian Marketing Association.  She was also a recipient of the Star Women in Grocery Award in 2015, and named Marketer of the Year by Strategy in 2012.
