My sport:

Swimming & Bowling

My favourite thing about Special Olympics:

Having monthly swim meets so I can see the other athletes from the different swim teams. We have become friendly over the years.

My greatest accomplishment:

Attending the World Games in Athens, Greece in 2011 and Abu Dhabi/Dubai in 2019.

How Special Olympics changed my life:

I have been swimming with the Dundas Seahawks Swim Team since 1990 and have made some good friends. Most years we get new swimmers on the team so you get to know more people. Also I have made some very good friends on the other teams in our Conference. Also we have some wonderful coaches who work so hard with us to improve our overall skills.

I also participated in the Special Olympics Canada program, Healthy Eyes, and it was determined that I had cataracts. On my return home from Games, we immediately got an appointment to see a Specialist and I have since had the cataracts removed from both eyes. I have much better vision thanks to the Healthy Athletes program.

How I've been staying healthy and active at home:

I have kept busy by exercising every day. I walk on my treadmill for 40 minutes every day and 30 minutes on my rowing machine. I put my times in every week for Walk the World With Me. I have been eating very healthy meals every day as we always do.

My favourite memory:

The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit Abu Dhabi/Dubai. Our accommodations were amazing; we got to go on tours and I went up in the tallest building in the World although I had to sit on the floor on the way up in the elevator. We also got to go on a desert tour where we got to ride all over the sand dunes in desert vehicles and then got to ride a camel. I was a bit nervous on the camel at first but it was an awesome experience. I will never forget this fabulous experience.

Why you should Draft an Athlete to help us get back to the playing field:

It is important that every Special Olympics athlete have the opportunity to experience the fun and friendships formed by participating in the sport of their choice; be it swimming, bowling, baseball, track and field, soccer, etc. Through this participation you will make lifetime friendships and excel in your chosen sport through the excellent coaching provided on the different teams.

What I'm looking forward to most when returning to our regular Special Olympics programming:

I am looking forward to getting back in the water and getting back into shape and seeing all of my teammates again. I have missed seeing them since March but have kept in touch with some of them thanks to Zoom. I am also looking forward to seeing all my friends in our bowling league soon.
