TORCH

The Games are officially open! The Opening Ceremony was an incredible success, celebrating Nova Scotia and its incredible and unique culture. Delegations from coast-to-coast-to-coast looked on as they were welcomed by GOC co-chairs Carl Chisolm and Marc Champoux, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities and Minister of Science, Kirsty Duncan and Chair of the Board of Special Olympics Canada and Olympian, Mark Tewksbury. Athletes were treated to incredible performances by traditional Mi’kmaq, Acadian and African dancers, Charlie A’Court and Nova Scotian band The Trews. The Final Leg of the LETR Torch Relay was a highlight, as the Torch had travelled across Nova Scotia and the Cairn was officially lit by athlete Erin, LETR member Kim and Special Olympics pioneer, Dr. Frank Hayden. An incredible official kick-off to the Games, the Opening Ceremony was one for the books! Athletes are now off to bed to get a good night’s rest before competition officially starts tomorrow.
