For Maire O’Connor’s family, one of the most meaningful moments in Special Olympics happens before a game or activity even begins — seeing other athletes greet her with smiling faces.

After moving back to Canada from Japan, Maire’s parents were searching for programs and supports that would help their daughter feel connected, included, and confident. Since joining Special Olympics Canada, they say they have found exactly that.

“It’s given Maire an environment to grow and develop in with accepting friends,” her parents, Meg and James, share. “It’s great to see people greet Maire with smiling faces.”

Now living in Coquitlam, British Columbia, the 11-year-old participates in FUNdamentals, gymnastics, swimming, and soccer programming — building confidence while trying new activities and making friendships along the way.

When asked what she enjoys most about being a Special Olympics athlete, her answer comes quickly:

    Swimming at the pool!

Maire’s family first discovered Special Olympics through connections in their community after hearing about a local soccer program from another athlete at her school.

Since joining, they have watched Maire continue to grow both socially and physically through sport.

One of the biggest improvements they have noticed has come in the pool.

What we have noticed the most is her improvement in swimming. She is getting closer to swimming on her own every week.

That growth reflects the message behind this year’s Empire Family of Brands in-store fundraising campaign: “Every best is personal.”

For Maire’s family, the phrase is a reminder that growth looks different for every athlete.

“You shouldn’t have to compare yourself to others,” they say. “Rising to a challenge is always a cause for celebration.”

When asked to describe Maire’s personal best, her family immediately thinks about the friendships and confidence she has developed through Special Olympics.

“Making new friends for sure,” they say.

Her family says programs like Special Olympics are important because every person deserves the opportunity to feel included and part of something bigger than themselves.

Being part of a team or a group can be such a beneficial experience for anyone, so no one should be excluded from that experience.

That is why they hope Canadians will support Special Olympics athletes during this year’s Empire Family of Brands campaign.

“For only $2 you are improving the lives of hundreds of hopeful athletes.”

From June 11 to 21, customers visiting participating Empire Family of Brands stores across Canada can donate $2 at checkout to help support Special Olympics athletes like Maire — helping create more opportunities for children, youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to experience sport, friendship, confidence and community.

When asked what she would like to say to Empire Family of Brands teammates and customers supporting Special Olympics athletes across Canada, Maire’s message is sincere and full of gratitude:

    “Thank you for helping me!”

For Maire’s family, Special Olympics has already made a lasting impact — and they believe it will continue to shape her future for years to come.

“Since moving back to Canada from Japan we’ve had trouble finding support for Maire,” they share. “Special Olympics has been the best experience so far, and I can see it being a part of her life for tens of years into the future.”

And for families considering getting involved with Special Olympics, their advice is immediate:

100% do it! Your child will love it.
