Meet Employee Athlete Ambassadors, Allie Price | Empire Family of Brands Fundraising Campaign 2026
Most mornings, Allie Price is one of the familiar faces helping keep her local Safeway store in Airdrie, Alberta running — welcoming customers, working alongside teammates, and taking pride in the job she has now loved for nearly a decade.
On her days off, she is often on the golf course or in the gym training — continuing the work that helped take the Special Olympics athlete all the way to the podium at the Special Olympics World Summer Games Berlin 2023, where she captured a silver medal in golf.
For Allie, both environments — the workplace and sport — have shaped who she is today.
After joining Special Olympics in 2009, she quickly discovered opportunities that extended far beyond competition itself.
That confidence has carried into her everyday life at Safeway, where she has worked for eight years as a variety and grocery assistant.
“I enjoy working with employees, I love to engage with customers, and I take pride in my work at Safeway,” she says.
Over time, Allie says the lessons she learned through Special Olympics have also shaped the way she approaches her job and the people around her.
Her coworkers and managers have embraced and supported her athletic career along the way, encouraging her accomplishments and helping accommodate time away for competitions.
That support is one reason why inclusion in the workplace matters so deeply to her.
“An inclusive workplace is important because persons with disabilities need to feel they can earn money,” she says. “Inclusion is feeling good and being a part of the Safeway family.”
While Allie has competed in many tournaments throughout her Special Olympics career, one memory still stands above the rest.
“My favourite memory is winning a silver medal in the World Summer Games in Berlin 2023.”
For her, the achievement represented much more than a result on a leaderboard. It reflected years of training, resilience and determination — especially through challenging competition conditions.
For Allie, the idea that “Every best is personal” reflects something she has learned through both sport and life: success looks different for everyone, but everyone has the ability to achieve success when given the opportunity.
“The campaign message means that each athlete is unique and we can have our own goals to achieve,” Allie says.
As both a Special Olympics athlete and a Safeway teammate, she has seen firsthand how community support can help create opportunities for athletes of all abilities.
From June 11 to 21, customers visiting participating Empire Family of Brands stores across Canada can donate $2 at checkout to help support Special Olympics athletes like Allie — helping create more opportunities for children, youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to experience sport, confidence, friendship and community.
For Allie, the impact of Special Olympics is simple.
“Inclusion in sports and community helps people to be healthier and happier.”
For Allie, being both a Special Olympics athlete and a Safeway teammate has shown her the power of feeling supported by the people around you — whether that is coworkers cheering on her accomplishments or teammates encouraging one another through sport.
“I feel very lucky to have support from both my Safeway family and my Special Olympics family,” she says. “Seeing everyone come together to support athletes like me means so much. That’s the kind of team I’m proud to be part of.”
You can support Special Olympics athletes like Allie by making a donation this June 11 to 21 at participating Empire Family of Brands stores including: Sobeys, Safeway, Ontario Foodland, Atlantic Foodland and participating CO-OPs, IGA West, Thrifty Foods, Lawtons Drugs and Needs Convenience stores.
