PROVINCE:  British Columbia

How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

Over 7 years.

How is your life different since joining Special Olympics?

So many things have changed. I have met some wonderful people who have become close friends. I have been able to challenge myself in ways I did not expect. I have grown as a person to be more organized, patient, inclusive and supportive. Coaching with Special Olympics provides new and unique challenges that encourages me to see things in a different way and come up with creative solutions. I think many of us get involved with Special Olympics to help others and quickly realize we end up benefitting just as much as the athletes do.

What do you like most about the sport you will be competing in at Special Olympics World Summer Games Berlin 2023?

Rhythmic Gymnastics is a challenging sport which encourages confidence, independence, grace, stamina and concentration. I love watching the growth of each athlete as they learn to perform their routines at the best of their ability. Seeing how proud they are of themselves after a performance is a highlight for me.

What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?

So hard to narrow this down! There are two moments that stand out. One was at the Medal Ceremony at the previous Special Olympics National Games in Nova Scotia. An athlete who did not think she would win any medals won multiple medals and the look on her face was magical. She was overflowing with joy and confidence. I was so proud that I was able to support her on her journey to that moment. My second moment that stands out is a small moment when one of the Vancouver Rhythmic Gymnastics athletes moms came up to me and thanked me for what I do. She thanked me for having a safe, fun, and welcoming program. That meant the world to me.

What does Special Olympics and attending World Games mean to you?

Being part of Special Olympics Team Canada is an incredible opportunity to represent Canada in a positive and inclusive manner. I am so proud to have the opportunity to share this amazing experience with four unique and skilled athletes and support them in every step of the journey.

What is your goal for Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023?

My goal is for the four Rhythmic Gymnastics athletes to have a fun, safe and successful World Games. I hope they all perform to the best of their ability, come home feeling proud of themselves and have positive memories that will last a lifetime.
