How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

I have been a Special Olympics volunteer coach for 27 years.

How is your life different since joining Special Olympics?

Special Olympics has been a huge part of my life. I have been involved for more than half of my life. No matter what is going on in my life, coaching Special Olympics each week has been a major source of joy. I have never left a practice in anything but a happy mood.

What do you like most about the sport you will be competing in at Special Olympics World Summer Games Berlin 2023?

I am excited to be a part of the Tenpin Bowling team. I have coached many sports throughout my life, but this will be my first experience with Bowling, as well as my first experience as Mission Staff.

What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?

My proudest moment came from a Special Olympics World Games that I didn't even attend. One of the swimmers from my local club, who I have coached for all 27 years was swimming at World Games in Abu Dhabi. Because the Games were so far away, I was watching the races on a live stream. It was the 100m Freestyle race and Sarah Jane found herself trailing at the 50m mark. In all my years of coaching I have never seen her lose a race, so this was a new experience for both of us. Without missing a beat, Sarah Jane started to implement the coaching advice I had given her week in and week out at practice and was able to overtake and keep the lead with 5m to go, winning her 3rd gold medal of the Games. I watched the livestream with tears in my eyes knowing that my coaching and advice paid off at the biggest stage.

What does Special Olympics and attending World Games mean to you?

I am so proud to be a part of Special Olympics Team Canada. It is an honor to represent my country and help athletes achieve their goals.

What is your goal for Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023?

My goal is to spread the message of love and inclusion while supporting the athletes and coaches.
