How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

20 years.

How is your life different since joining Special Olympics?

My life has changed immensely since getting involved with Special Olympics. I got involved to help out as the programs needed volunteers. 20 years later Special Olympics has allowed me to make a positive difference in many athlete’s lives - in sport and in improving many daily living skills which has enriched their lives. It has also changed and been an inspiration in my life seeing the determination these athletes show. Having athletes expressing how I have made a difference in their lives is touching and powerful, but knowing how they have made a difference in my life is priceless.

What do you like most about the sport you will be participating in at Special Olympics World Summer Games Berlin 2023?

I like bocce and seeing our athletes competing as Individuals and as a team, and I like bocce as it is a sport of skill, precision and strategy where the athletes have to constantly adjust to the changing situation on the court.

What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?

My proudest moments with Special Olympics are walking into my first World Games as part of Team Canada, and then watching my son compete and win gold and silver medals during those Games. I also am proud of our athletes and how they display the true meaning of sportsmanship by celebrating their efforts, their teammates efforts and by congratulating and celebrating with their fellow athletes no matter what the outcome of the competition.

What does Special Olympics and attending World Games mean to you?

Being a part of Special Olympics Team Canada has allowed me to become part of the Special O family and meet incredible athletes, Coaches and Mission Staff from across Canada. It has enhanced my life and given me experiences that I could not have imagined, while giving me the experience of a lifetime by being able to represent my country and walk into a World Games wearing the Maple Leaf on my back.

What is your goal for Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023?

My goal is for my athletes to be the best athlete they can be, compete to the best of their abilities and exceed their expectations, while enjoying the whole experience ensuring that this is a memory they will cherish forever.
