“It is going to be amazing!,” she said about the upcoming Special Olympics Canada Summer Games.

The last time Special Olympics Canada covered Rebecca Birss, she was celebrating her athletic achievements on the world stage, while acknowledging that she only started practicing rhythmic gymnastics as a doctor-recommended way to stay healthy. Now, she’s returning to national-level competitions with a gymnast’s grace and control.

“I really like the ball routine,” Rebecca said, “it has some fun moves and great choreography!”

Like every athlete going to the National Games, Rebecca is training hard to make sure she can do her best in competition, and enjoy every moment during her trip to Medicine Hat, Alberta. However, she also recommends consistent training as a great way for people to learn new skills, regardless of how competitive they are right now.

Even if you cannot do a skill at first, with practice, you will improve. It just takes time and effort and you can achieve almost anything.

Having graduated high school in June, Rebecca is currently in an adult day program and started a new part-time job in a co-op grocery store. She still manages to find time to participate in Special Olympics programs.

Whether it be indoor or outdoor, or summer or winter, team or individual, there is always something to keep me active and healthy throughout the year.

Rebecca’s parents said they will also be travelling to Medicine Hat, to watch their daughter compete in person.
