“Easy to learn” in Special Olympics, says swimmer at Medicine Hat National Games

“It’s easy to learn how to swim with Special Olympics,” says Nova Scotia athlete Aiya Peters, “my coaches are very encouraging.”

After travelling halfway across the continent to compete in Special Olympics Canada Summer Games Medicine Hat 2026, Nova Scotia swimmer Aiya Peters gave a shout out to the coaches who helped make her journey possible.

“I love swimming with Lunenburg Queens team in Bridgewater!” She said.

“At swim practice, we practice all strokes, flip turns, touch turns. Some people dive off the wall while others dive off the blocks. I dive off the block.”

Eager to compete in the 100m breast stroke and 200m freestyle—among other events—Aiya said her favourite part of the national competition is “making new friends” and “swimming in lots of races”!
