ASSISTANT COACH – 10 PIN BOWLING

PROVINCE: Alberta

How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

I have been with Special Olympics for 30 + years.

How is your life different since joining Special Olympics?

It has given me the opportunity to develop athletes’ skills and train them to be the best that they can be. In working with persons with intellectual disabilities the past 35 years, I have seen that Special Olympics provides a needed purpose in their lives. It helps them grow and learn things in their sports as well as provide the opportunity for many to engage in social activities.

What do you like most about the sport you will be competing in at Special Olympics World Summer Games Berlin 2023?

I have been coaching various sports over the years but my main focus has always been

bowling. Its a sport that I have been able to train athletes locally, provincially, and nationally. Participating with this group and being able to help them train over the year is fantastic. Hearing the pins fall and the expressions of the athletes when they get that fantastic shot is why I enjoy this sport.

What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?

I can’t say there is one specific moment, but I think if I had to choose one that has stood out it would be in 2003 at the Special Olympics World Games in Ireland when I was able to watch my first Team Canada athlete (who was also one of my athletes I trained with locally) be presented with a gold medal.

What does Special Olympics and attending World Games mean to you?

To me, it means that I can be part of an organization that provides persons of all abilities the freedom to participate and represent their country.

What is your goal for Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023?

My goal is to provide the athletes the ability to fulfill their goals of being part of Team Canada. I want to provide them with wonderful experiences that help drive them to reach their goals.
