How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

Almost 40 years.

How is your life different since joining Special Olympics?

Special Olympics has changed my life in many ways. For example, I have gained friendships all over Canada, and even the World. I have learned so much from my involvement. It has afforded me opportunities to improve my leadership skills, improve my communication skills, and overall become a better person. At any level, whether at a local community practice, Provincial Games, up to a World Games, I continue to be amazed by the athletes, their dedication to sport, and how honest and fair they are to their fellow athletes, coaches, and volunteers.

What do you like most about the sport you will be participating in at Special Olympics World Summer Games Berlin 2023?

My role for this team is as Mission Staff for Powerlifting. This a new role for me and is also a new sport for me to be involved with. I am looking forward to learning all I can about the sport. What I like most, so far, is the determination of the athletes, and their desire to compete yet be so supportive of each other. I am also looking forward to seeing the athletes fulfill their training goals and compete to the best of their ability.

What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?

Having the pleasure to be the Head Coach of Team Canada's swim team for the 2019 World Games in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Overall, it was a fantastic experience. To choose one moment is difficult but is probably parading into the opening ceremony of those World Games, as part of Team Canada, wearing our Team Canada gear.

What does Special Olympics and attending World Games mean to you?

Being part of Team Canada is an incredible honour and is very humbling. Very few people get to be part of this experience. I am happy that I can use and share my skills with other members of the team to help make the team the best it can be.

What is your goal for Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023?

My goal is to provide support to and for the Powerlifting team coaches and athletes and make it a safe and fun experience for everyone. For most, this will be a once in a lifetime experience, they will never forget. I hope everyone involved has an incredible and memorable experience, from training for these games, through to competing at the games, and everything else that makes up this journey.
