How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

Eight memorable years.

How is your life different since joining Special Olympics?

I am a better person today having learned true courage and the “Never give up” attitude from the athletes. I learned that everyone has similar goals and dreams, regardless of your situation in life and the importance of having a positive attitude when presented with new and seemingly insurmountable challenges.

What do you like most about the sport you will be competing in at Special Olympics World Summer Games Berlin 2023?

My favourite thing about golf is watching athletes develop problem solving skills that will help them throughout their life. To break down golf into its simplest terms, you have a bag of sticks with a wedge attached and a ball. How do you best use those sticks to get the ball in a hole that’s far away. If that’s not already difficult enough, you need to consider sand traps; water hazards; rain; deep grass; wind; trees; hills; plus, many more obstacles that golf throws at you every time you play. Even if you hit the perfect shot, it may land in a spot that makes your next shot almost impossible. Each shot presents a problem to solve, and athletes need to use critical thinking skills that give them the best opportunity to hit the next ball where they want it to land. Golf has a way of emulating life. Accept your situation, and then strategize and solve any problems you encounter to give yourself the best chance for success.

What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?

I’m proud every moment of every day being a positive influence on the personal and social growth of athletes as they become more confident in themselves and lead a more active lifestyle.

What does Special Olympics and attending World Games mean to you?

It’s an honor and privilege to coach athletes pursuing their dreams at the 2023 Special Olympics World Games. It gives me an opportunity to share my broad range of experiences, helping athletes prepare physically and mentally to give their best performance.

What is your goal for Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023?

Providing the best opportunity for the entire team and families to have the best experience possible and represent Canada to the best of their ability. This is achieved by creating an inclusive team environment and team culture that makes everyone feel safe physically, psychologically, and everyone feels they have an equal and important voice. The goal is a team that is respectful of everyone’s differences and all members have a sense of belonging
