Year of the Volunteer - Youth Program Volunteer, Elliott McNeil-McInnis
2026 is the International Year of Volunteers. All year long we will be highlighting and celebrating our amazing volunteers.
In Fall of 2025, grade 11 student, Elliott McNeil-McInnis approached Special Olympics PEI with the goal of starting a new youth program. With a background in Flag Football, Elliott's initial intention was to offer something in that specific sport. Through collaboration with our staff, this idea evolved in a Youth Multi Sport program. Although a youth himself, Elliott helped to secure additional volunteers, and we are thrilled to say that the program was added to our Spring Program Schedule.
We asked Elliott a few questions about her experience volunteering with Special Olympics PEI.
Question: Tell us about your experience as a new volunteer with Special Olympics PEI? How did you get started, and what made you first want to volunteer?
Answer: I started volunteering with Special Olympics PEI this spring, and it has honestly been an amazing experience so far. I originally wanted to get involved with coaching flag football. Though the program I am involved with now isn't 100% flag football focused, I still find it very awesome! Because I enjoy coaching and helping athletes grow both on and off the field. I also wanted to be part of something that creates such a positive and welcoming environment for everyone involved.
Q: What is your favourite part about being a volunteer with Special Olympics PEI?
A: My favourite part about volunteering with Special Olympics PEI has been building connections with the athletes and seeing how excited everyone is each week. The energy, support, and encouragement throughout the program makes it really rewarding to be a part of.
Q: Why should others consider volunteering with Special Olympics PEI?
A: I think others should consider volunteering with Special Olympics PEI because it is such a positive experience and a great way to give back to the community. Even in a short amount of time, you can make a real impact while also learning a lot yourself. It is an environment full of support, teamwork, and fun.
