Meet Basketball athlete, Jennifer Hickox
Jennifer Hickox has been involved with Special Olympics for 16 years, and to say it’s been a game changer in life might be an understatement. Supported by her Basketball teammates, Jenn is excited to hit the court this weekend at the Special Olympics Nova Scotia Provincial Games.
While Jenn has found a place a joy and belonging in Special Olympics, that wasn’t always Jenn’s reality. Jenn was the victim of bullying in school when she was growing up, a time that she reflects on with sadness. After finding Special Olympics, things changed for Jenn.
Special Olympics gave me my self confidence back. It gave me self esteem, and I have really great coaches that encourage me.
It is being part of a team that Jennifer loves most about Basketball. As Provincial Games begin, Jennifer is most looking forward to being with her team. They have worked hard to prepare for the Games, with weekly workouts. “Our coaches pushed us to our limits, in a good way, and it’s brought us here” says Jennifer.
From when Jenn started until now, she’s seen a huge improvement. She listens well, and she takes instructions well. She works hard, she comes to the gym excited, and she constantly tells me she loves the sport, which is awesome. I know she’s a bit nervous (for Provincial Games) but her nervous are good, in my opinion. She’s passionate about the game, and she’s very excited, and so am I to have her here.
Off the court, Jenn is an active member of Special Olympics PEI’s Athlete Leadership Academy. Jenn loves the opportunity to share her story, and is always encouraging others to join Special Olympics. She says “come in and you’ll make so many new friends. It’s amazing!”
