Meet Athlete Ambassador, Oliver Vaughan | Empire Family of Brands Fundraising Campaign 2025
Ask Oliver Vaughan what he likes most about being a Special Olympics athlete, and his answer is clear: belonging. Whether it’s shooting hoops during basketball or playing freely with friends, Oliver thrives in an environment where he feels accepted, supported, and celebrated for exactly who he is.
Now nine years old, Oliver has been involved with Special Olympics since the age of three, after his family discovered a local gym program through their occupational therapist. His mom, Amy, says the impact has been remarkable—not just in Oliver’s physical activity, but in his confidence, emotional growth, and social development. “He finally feels like he has a team—just like all the other kids—and a place where he can be 100% himself.”

One of Oliver’s proudest moments? Scoring his first independent basket. But it’s the quieter wins—like learning to manage big emotions and making a lifelong friend—that have meant the most.
Recently, the Vaughans discovered Sobeys’ Nutrition Corner, and it’s become a fun way to talk about healthy choices and how to fuel up before a big game. Oliver’s top picks? Grapes, cucumbers, and strawberries with yogurt.
To all the Empire customers donating this June, Oliver has a special message:
“Thank you very much. We all really appreciate the donations. This helps kids like me keep these programs and feel like they belong.”
For the Vaughan family, Special Olympics has become more than a program—it’s a community. And they’re excited to see where Oliver’s journey goes next.
