Jackson Pink is an energetic 11-year-old from Pasadena, NL, who’s discovered a love for sports—and a sense of belonging—through Special Olympics. From running and kicking to group games on the basketball court, Jackson says it best: “I love it all.”

Jackson joined Special Olympics in 2024 when his mom, Jeannette, realized there weren’t any local programs for younger athletes. So, she joined forces with another parent to launch a Special Olympics FUNdamentals program in their community. The impact was immediate. For the first time, Jackson got to be part of a team sport. “He’s never had that chance before,” says Jeannette. “Now he can proudly say he played a real basketball game.”

Since then, his confidence has soared—so much so that he took up golf and even represented Canada in a tournament. Jeannette calls it life-changing, sharing “We will forever be fans of Special Olympics.”

“Jackson has never played a group sport before, for many different reasons. Special Olympics FUNdamentals program has allowed him to experience what group sport can be like. HE LOVES IT. We have noticed that he's more confident and willing to try other sports now.” - Jackson's mother, Jeannette

Each Fundamentals session ends with a healthy snack, often inspired by Sobeys’ Nutrition Corner resources—something Jackson looks forward to just as much as the game. At home, yogurt and granola cups or cheese strings are a family favourite for fueling up.

To everyone donating at Empire stores this June, Jackson has a heartfelt message: “Thank you for being kind. I love the healthy snack after we finish playing.”

And from Jeannette: “Your donation helps make sure kids like Jackson—who might not otherwise get the chance—can be part of something meaningful, healthy, and fun. These programs are free, run by volunteers, and create real community.”

For Jackson and his family, Special Olympics has been more than sport—it’s been joy, connection, and a huge source of pride.
