How many years have you been involved with Special Olympics?
I have been an athlete with Special Olympics for 45 years!
Why did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?
I started as a teenager in the swimming program. The coaches helped me become a really good swimmer and more confident. I then tried bowling and really enjoyed it, because I made a lot of friends there. My family plays bocce, so I wanted to try that too - and now I have a dream come true. Special Olympics has given me friends, fun, and physical activity. It has been a great way to build my confidence and for me to see that I can do a lot of sports and have a lot of fun.
What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?
I am competitive, and sometimes don't like to lose. I am learning how to be ok with not winning. I also get frustrated when I am not understood, so I use my phone to help me now.
What other sports do you participate in?
I also participate with Bowling with Special Olympics PEI. I also play badminton, croquet and tried pickleball this summer. I still swim all year in the pool and ocean.
What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?
Participating in Special Olympics has taught me how to be a better player and how to try my best.
What are you most looking forward to at the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games?
I am most looking forward to playing against new people and seeing a new place with friends and family.
What is your favourite Special Olympics moment?
My favourite Special Olympics moments was winning the gold medal for Bocce Provincials this year. I worked hard to win.
