How many years have you been involved with Special Olympics?

I have been involved with Special Olympics for 7 years.

Why did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?

When I first moved to PEI I was looking for a way to be involved in my community. I have always played and loved sports. During university I worked as a summer student for a day program for an organization at home that supported individuals with intellectual disabilities. Every Wednesday afternoon a large group of participants would play ball hockey. I remember two brothers telling me all about their involvement with Special Olympics for the sport of Floor Hockey. So when I was settled in PEI and wanted to get involved, Special Olympics was my first call.

Special Olympics has forever changed my life. I have gotten to meet so many athletes, coaches, and volunteers. Each one coming with a different and inspiring story. Being able to watch how sport has such a positive impact on our athletes is the most grounding and heart warming experience.

What are you most looking forward to at the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games?

This is a loaded question, because I don't think I can say everything! I think I am most excited to be in Medicine Hat. To be able to cheer, watch and support the athletes after their year of training and preparation. Regardless of outcomes, it is so fun being able to see where the athletes start, and where they finish.

What is your favourite Special Olympics moment?

It is impossible to choose, and it changes every time I'm asked. Right now, I'd say being apart of Team PEI in 2024 and being able to travel to Special Olympics Canada Winter Games. The whole experience from training to travelling was so much fun. One moment I remember so clearly is walking into Opening Ceremonies, and hearing the crowds cheer on our athletes. It was unlike anything I'd experienced before!

What does being a part of Team PEI 2026 mean to you?

Being apart of Team PEI 2026 is a huge honour and privilege. It means getting to work with and meet new athletes and making new friends. It means getting to help my team train and prepare for, what could be, the biggest competition in their lives. It means endless laughs, smiles and memories!
