How many years have you been involved with Special Olympics?

I have been involved with Special Olympics for 10.5 years – 9 years here in PEI and 1.5 years in New Zealand.

Why did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?

I wanted to volunteer to meet new people and to help those who need more support. A bonus is that I get an extra workout every week playing alongside SO athletes.

What are you most looking forward to at the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games?

I'm looking forward to cheering on athletes when they compete in the sport they've trained on for the last few years!

What is your favourite Special Olympics moment?

One of my first SO classes we were playing basketball and an athlete threw me the ball and told me to shoot it in the net. I said "oh I'm not very good" to which she responded "that's ok, you just have to try". The athletes cheered me on until I got it in the net (only three tries!) I knew that I had found a special group I wanted to spend more time with. "You just have to try" is a great reminder for everyone when trying something new.

What does being a part of Team PEI 2026 mean to you?

I'm delighted to be a part of Team PEI 2026. I'm excited to work with staff and athletes to have a safe and successful SOC Summer Games!
