How many years have you been involved with Special Olympics?

I have been a Special Olympics athlete for 19 years.  

Why did you first get involved with Special Olympics and how has it changed your life?

My relationship with Special Olympics started back in 2006 after the passing of my father. My Mom and I were talking one day, and she encouraged me to make a life for myself. She suggested I join the Special Olympics bowling program in my town. I had always heard about Special Olympics but for one reason or another the timing was never right for me. Now, I cannot see my life without Special Olympics. It has given me so many opportunities inside and outside sports.

What is a challenge or barrier that you have overcome?

The challenge or barrier I have overcome is that I have a partially visually and hearing impairment. Golf was challenge because of my visually impartment. I have had a caddy for support  and to help me find the ball.  My local program coach knew capabilities driving a golf cart. With my coach’s help I am able to drive a golf cart on my own without any assistance.

What other sports do you participate in?

I also participate in 5-Pin Bowling, Community Multi-Sports and Bocce. Golf is my favourite sport.

What has participating in Special Olympics taught you?

Special Olympics has taught leadership skill, being a team player, confidence, and having a positive attitude.

What are you most looking forward to at the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games?

I am most looking forward to making new friends, meeting people from across Canada, doing my best in the sport of golf and having fun.

What is your favourite Special Olympics moment?

One of my dreams came true a few years ago. In 2020, I was selected to the Global Athletes’ Leadership Council representing Canada, the United States and Caribbean region. I also had the honour of attending the Global Athletes Congress in June 2023 in Berlin, Germany during the Special Olympics World Summer Games.

What does being a part of Team PEI 2026 mean to you?

Having the opportunity to travel Medicine Hat, cheering on and encouraging Team PEI in whatever sport they play.
