ALTERNATE COACH - POWERLIFTING

PROVINCE:  British Columbia

How long have you been involved with Special Olympics?

Since 2009.

How is your life different since joining Special Olympics?

I am a better person, husband, father, coach and Deputy Sheriff because of involvement in Special Olympics. From the world class training I have received to the personal connections that I have made with athletes, family members, volunteers and other coaches not just in Canada but around the world. I continue to grow everyday, and I am always amazed by the ability to overcome whatever challenges arises. Special Olympics gives me hope for a better tomorrow.

What do you like most about the sport you will be competing in at Special Olympics World Summer Games Berlin 2023?

Powerlifting is this small worldwide community where everyone wants everyone to succeed. Growth is long term, and it takes commitment from everyone. The athletes, the families, the communities to create opportunities for success, and it does not change where you are. Strong is strong. Personal best efforts matter regardless of the result.

What is your proudest moment with Special Olympics?

Flying with my son Callum to National Games in 2018 at Antigonish Nova Scotia. I never would have thought that was possible and it would not have been possible without the Special Olympics Family.

What does Special Olympics and attending World Games mean to you?

Special Olympics gives me hope. Hope that it will be better for myself, my family, friends and community. Special Olympics Team Canada is a continuation of hopes and dreams for so many athletes and families across Canada who are united in what is possible rather than being limited but what people think is not possible. We are shaping a world where people with intellectual disabilities are celebrated and included rather than ignored and excluded.

What is your goal for Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023?

To have fun and support the athletes, coaches and team members as they find their own personal success, whatever that may be to that person.
