Pasadena Boy Becomes Proud Ambassador Through Special Olympics Fundamentals Program

"The power of sport to unite communities and empower individuals is truly remarkable."
Pasadena, NL - Gerri Lynn Mackey of VOCM News recently sat down with 11-year-old Jackson Pink and his mother Jeanette to shine a spotlight on an inspiring young athlete and a growing movement on Newfoundland’s west coast.
Jackson is part of the Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador (SONL) Fundamentals Program, a fully-funded initiative that introduces children with intellectual and physical disabilities to a variety of sports in a supportive, inclusive environment. The program is designed to help young athletes develop physical literacy, motor skills, and a lifelong love for physical activity.
During the interview, Mackey opened with a powerful sentiment:
"The power of sport to unite communities and empower individuals is truly remarkable."
That power is on full display in communities like Pasadena, where a group of parents—recognizing a need for inclusive sport options—worked together to bring the Fundamentals Program to their region. Among the program’s first participants was Jackson Pink, whose enthusiasm and positive energy quickly made him a standout.
Now, Jackson proudly serves as an ambassador for Special Olympics, helping raise awareness and inspire other families to get involved.
His mom Jeanette spoke about the transformative impact the program has had—not only on Jackson, but on their entire community.
“It’s more than just sports. It’s confidence, it’s friendships, it’s belonging,” she shared during the interview. “This program has opened up a world of possibilities for Jackson.”
The Fundamentals Program is one of many Special Olympics initiatives that aim to break down barriers and build a more inclusive world through sport. Thanks to donor support and corporate partners like the Empire Family of Brands, these programs are offered at no cost to families across Newfoundland and Labrador.
