Year of the Volunteer - Winter Sport Coach Larry Robbins
2026 is the International Year of Volunteers. All year long we will be highlighting and celebrating our amazing volunteers.
This month, with our Winter Sports well under way, we are thrilled to highlight Charlottetown Speed Skating Coach, Larry Robbins. Like many volunteers in the Special Olympics movement, Larry stepped up as a volunteer coach, in part, because his son, Logan was an athlete. In addition to coaching Speed Skating, Larry also volunteers with the Charlottetown Soccer program.
We asked Larry a few questions about his experience volunteering as a Winter Sport Coach.
Question: What is your favourite part about being a Speed Skating coach?
Answer: I love seeing how our speed skating team gets along and celebrates every win, big or small, with enthusiasm that’s truly contagious. Watching them improve, compete, and push each other with all their heart is one of the most rewarding parts of coaching
Q: What is your favourite part about being a volunteer with Special Olympics PEI
A: My favourite part about volunteering with Special Olympics PEI is working directly with the athletes—seeing how eagerly they take on instructions and witnessing the pure joy in their faces the moment you walk into the room. Their enthusiasm and positivity make every experience unforgettable.
Q: Why should others consider volunteering with Special Olympics PEI?
A: Volunteering with Special Olympics PEI is an amazing experience because the athletes truly give back more than you could ever give them. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch them grow, gain confidence, and develop new skills with your support. Seeing their progress—and knowing you played even a small part in it—is one of the most satisfying feelings.
Become a Volunteer
Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. Without them, we could not deliver on our promise to enrich the lives of children, youth, and adults involved in our programs. Consider volunteering with an organization that changes attitudes and builds stronger communities across Prince Edward Island. You will make meaningful and lasting changes in many lives, including your own.
