2026 is the International Year of Volunteers. All year long we will be highlighting and celebrating our amazing volunteers.

This month, with the PEI Provincial Home Show underway, we are excited to highlight Knights of Columbus member, David Murphy! David is a long time Home Show volunteer and is seen year after year on the lanes volunteering at the Special Olympics Bowling Provincials.

We asked David a few questions about his experience volunteering with Special Olympics PEI.

Question: What do you enjoy most about being part of our Home Show team?

Answer: I enjoy working with the athletes and volunteers of Special Olympics PEI, as well as the staff. Engaging with the group and being able to help in any way I can is meaningful to me. I’ve volunteered at the PEI Provincial Home Show and Bowling Provincials. I always appreciate the chance to support SOPEI athletes and staff wherever I’m needed.

    Q. What is your favorite part about being a volunteer with Special Olympics PEI?

    A. I love interacting with the athletes and being part of the positive, energetic atmosphere. Offering encouragement, high‑fives, and support—whatever they need in the moment—is incredibly rewarding. Working with Special Olympics athletes has become a family trait.  We have long ties to Tremploy, so supporting this community feels natural.

    Q. Why should others consider volunteering with Special Olympics PEI?

    A. The experience is deeply satisfying. You get to give back, see the athletes’ smiles, and build memories that stay with you. The athletes know me by name and recognize me on the sidelines, which makes the connection even more special. Even small contributions can make a big difference, and I get to see that impact firsthand.

    Become a Volunteer

Volunteers are the backbone of our organization. Without them, we could not deliver on our promise to enrich the lives of children, youth, and adults involved in our programs. Consider volunteering with an organization that changes attitudes and builds stronger communities across Prince Edward Island. You will make meaningful and lasting changes in many lives, including your own.
