Meet Golf athlete, Chris Cook
Chris Cook signed up as an athlete with Special Olympics PEI this Fall, and he is already experiencing tremendous success! Chris competed with Team PEI Golf at this weekend’s Provincial Games. Along with memories that will last a lifetime, Chris is also coming home with a Bonze medal.
While this might have been Chris’ first summer golfing with Special Olympics, Chris has been golfing his whole life with his dad and uncle. He says he likes the rules of the game.
Chris’ coaches describe him as a very hard worker, and someone who is dedicated to improving his game. Chris also speaks highly of his coaches, saying that they really know their stuff! Chris’ caddie this weekend, Chad Barkhouse, gave him the advice that “it’s just a game. It’s just a game that you’re doing well”.

Chris’ mom, Vicki Allen Cooke, heard about Special Olympics from a friend, Elizabeth Pippy, who just so happens to be athlete Erin Pippy’s mom. With his mom’s encouragement, Chris signed up for 5-Pin Bowling in the Fall. Vicki speaks highly of the benefits of Special Olympics, saying that Chris has found a place of belonging.

Looking ahead to what’s next Chris says “I want to improve my game, and try to be a better golfer. I am working on my putting, chipping, and driving. My goal is to be in the 60s”. From Coach Shayne’s perspective, that goal is within reach from Chris. “We’ll keep working on the positive things that he’s doing, building on those, and keep working on things he need to work on to improve his game, to get to his goal of shooting in the 60s. He’s not far way. We’ll keep working with him, and I know he’ll get there.”
