There is a place for everyone with an intellectual disability in Special Olympics.
Special Olympics NWT offers sports opportunity to individuals with an intellectual disability. Through the power of sports, individuals discover new strengths and abilities, skills and successes. Our athletes find joy, confidence and fulfillment - on the playing field and in life.
We have about 35 athletes, most of whom participate in more than one sport program! The benefits of these programs include:
- improved balance, coordination and body control
- physical fitness and conditioning
- increase in sport skills and competitive skills
- increase in self-confidence and social skills
Special Olympics NWT follows the Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model that looks to develop the physical education of individuals with an intellectual disability. This model allows people to stay "active for life".
