2025 Winner: Randy James

Special Olympics BC – Comox Valley coach Randy James is the deserving 2025 recipient of Special Olympics BC’s Howard Carter Award! Since 1989, James has been a dedicated and high-performing coach, approachable and highly respected for his positive attitude and commitment to Special Olympics athletes and sport excellence.
James has made a difference for many athletes as SOBC – Comox Valley’s longtime Head Coach for floorball/floor hockey and athletics, as well as providing valued leadership for many years as Local Coordinator. James has been a valued coach in eight Special Olympics Canada Games, 11 Special Olympics BC Games, three BC Summer Games, and once at a Canada Games. He’s also acted as Mission Staff and went to the 2000 Pre-World Games in Anchorage, AK.
“Randy is welcoming to all. He is clear and direct, and at the same time kind and encouraging. His professional role as an educator enhances his ability as a coach, to help athletes develop their problem-solving skills,” says his nominators.
James is known for his empowering ability to foster a love for sport while supporting athletes of all abilities.
“They trust him, and his guidance and support is very meaningful for them. He focuses on skill development and regularly attends workshops and conferences to improve his skills to in turn help the athletes develop theirs. He is always encouraging athletes to beat their personal best and is often heard saying ‘you can do this!’”
James will often hold extra practices or stay late to ensure the needs of each athlete are met.
His leadership extends beyond coaching. He has been a valued leader in the growth of Special Olympics BC Unified Sports programs on the Island. In Comox Valley, he organized and hosted a try-it event where athletes in the community were able to try the different sports Special Olympics BC – Comox Valley offers. As a result, the community saw new athletes register and continue.
