2025 Winner: Chris Dale
Special Olympics BC – Terrace coach Chris Dale is the deserving 2025 recipient of Special Olympics BC’s Grassroots Coach Award. For 21 years, Dale has been an invaluable asset to the Special Olympics BC – Terrace community. His dedication and commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for athletes of all abilities exemplifies the essence of grassroots coaching.
As the head coach for the Terrace Spirit Bears curling, soccer, and basketball teams, Dale leads the programs with unwavering enthusiasm and a deep sense of responsibility.
“His role extends far beyond just teaching the technical aspects of the sport; rather, Chris serves as a mentor, advocate, and friend to each athlete and volunteer under his guidance,” say his nominators.
In his coaching role, Dale prioritizes the holistic development of his athletes, emphasizing not only technical proficiency but also the importance of fair play, good sportsmanship, and personal growth.
“Chris's ability to recognize and celebrate the unique gifts of every athlete is truly inspiring and serves as a testament to his exceptional coaching skills.”
Dale has also served on the SOBC – Terrace Local Committee as Program Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator. Though now focused on coaching, he generously continues to train new coaches and volunteers.
His commitment to professional development is evident through his attendance at coaching seminars and webinars, and his involvement in provincial competitions.
Dale's coaching transcends sport, helping athletes develop life skills, self-esteem, and resilience. “Through regular interactions and open communication, Chris creates a safe space where athletes feel comfortable discussing their concerns and seeking guidance.”
His nominators shared an example of a long-standing athlete facing personal challenges who considered quitting curling. Dale recognized the issue, intervened with empathy, and created a supportive space where the athlete could share openly. The athlete chose to stay with his empowering support.
