When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics?
Six years ago, our son wanted to join to be with his friends, so we signed him up and loved watching the camaraderie. We were asked to become 5-pin bowling coaches the following year, and have not looked back since then.
Will this be your first Special Olympics Canada Games? If not, which other National Games were you part of and in what role(s)?
Yes.
What does it mean to you to be part of Special Olympics Team BC 2024?
I feel so honoured to be part of this amazing team. It has been fantastic meeting other coaches and athletes who have been competing for years – even decades – and to learn from them. They have helped me be a better coach and human being.
What is/are your goal(s) for these National Games?
My hope as a coach is to work with our team and make the National Games a memorable experience for everyone.
What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date?
I was privileged to attend to 2023 Provincial Games in Kamloops. To feel the energy of the athletes doing their best, enjoying themselves, the pride they showed in competition, and supporting their teammates and others was truly inspiring.
What does competing at National Games mean to your athletes? (or, if this is your first National Games, competition in general)
I believe our athletes work so hard for years. These National Games prove that all their efforts and dedication pay off.
What storylines are you excited to see develop in your SO Team BC sport team leading up to the National Games?
As we have not yet met our athletes, I am excited to meet and work together with them to have the best National Games experience possible.
What would you say about Special Olympics to encourage someone to get involved?
Open yourself up to a world like no other. It has been a fantastic and heart-opening experience for myself. I feel blessed for the opportunity to grow constantly by watching our athletes.
