Special Olympics Team BC 2020 Cross Country Skiing Coach
Sue Rowe

When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics?

Always loved cross country skiing. Used to work with folks with disabilities. When a SO ski program started in Golden maybe 15 years ago, the two things just came together.

Will this be your first Special Olympics Canada Games? If not, which other National Games were you part of and in what role(s)?

My first.

What does it mean to you to be part of Special Olympics Team BC 2020?

It's a BIG responsibility, especially as expectations for athletes' abilities have been clearly changing over recent years. Very exciting.

What is/are your goal(s) for these National Games?

Simply to help all our B.C. athletes ski their best and win as much as they can.

What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date?

Whether it's curling or softball, it's great to see their passion and improvement week over week.

What does competing at National Games mean to your athletes? (or, if this is your first National Games, competition in general)

Watching athletes cross the finishing line at Provincials looking like they've really skied their very best - i.e. exhausted and exhilarated!

What storylines are you excited to see develop in your Team BC sport team leading up to the National Games?

How enthusiastic the athletes are about training for the Games.

What would you say about Special Olympics to encourage someone to get involved?

It's challenging, but the rewards come in by the bucketful; in appreciation, and seeing people improve and do better than anyone expected in their sport. Life-changing for everyone, not just the athletes!
