When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics?
2022! My involvement happened by chance as an athlete who I used to coach when he was seven years old (now 15) decided to he wanted to go to Regional Qualifiers in 2022. The coach who was supposed to attend with him was unable to go and I was asked to go with him two days before competition, and have been involved since then!
Will this be your first Special Olympics Canada Games? If not, which other National Games were you part of and in what role(s)?
Yes, this will be my first National Games!
What does it mean to you to be part of Special Olympics Team BC 2024?
It truly means the world to me to be able to be a part of such a special event and organization. Every single person involved inspires me to no end.
What is/are your goal(s) for these National Games?
My goal(s) for these National games is to have fun! Support my athletes and everyone on our team and be as present as possible in the experience.
What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date?
My first Provincial Games, which was the 2023 SOBC Winter Games in Kamloops.
What does competing at National Games mean to your athletes? (or, if this is your first National Games, competition in general)
I am so proud of all my athletes who are doing this event and I know they are all very proud of themselves. I think this experience means a lot as it shows all the hard work that has been put in for years now by the athletes and everyone who supports them.
What storylines are you excited to see develop in your SO Team BC sport team leading up to the National Games?
I can’t wait to see everyone improve over the course of months leading up to National Games and to watch the excitement grow between everyone.
What would you say about Special Olympics to encourage someone to get involved?
Special Olympics is a space where such an amazingly diverse range of people can come together and be themselves, grow, support, and encourage one another. I’ve never experienced anything like it!
