Special Olympics Team BC 2020 Curling Coach
Mark Heartt

When and how did you get involved with Special Olympics?

My girlfriend who is now my wife got me involved in 2004. She signed me up as a curling coach.

Will this be your first Special Olympics Canada Games? If not, which other National Games were you part of and in what role(s)?

I was part of the mission staff at the 2006 National Summer Games in Brandon, Manitoba.

What does it mean to you to be part of Special Olympics Team BC 2020?

This is the greatest honour to be part of this team. Coaching Special Olympics athletes has been the most fulfilling activity I have ever done. The athletes give me way more than I can ever give them. It is a privilege to be a Special Olympics coach at any level.

What is/are your goal(s) for these National Games?

I want to prepare our team to be their best. If we win a medal that will be a bonus.

What is your favourite Special Olympics experience to date?

I had the opportunity to watch a gold-medal game in soccer. BC and Ontario were playing. Two athletes collided on the field, one from BC and the other from Ontario. Both teams stopped and there had not been a whistle. The one athlete helped the other one and no one took advantage of the open ball. The game was tied 1-1 and the play resumed once the athlete was on his feet. I had never witnessed such sportsmanship in my life.

What does competing at National Games mean to your athletes? (or, if this is your first National Games, competition in general)

Our athletes feel very privileged to be part of this team. They are committed to their training and I am very excited to see them compete.

What storylines are you excited to see develop in your Team BC sport team leading up to the National Games?

I want to see my athletes continue training and seeing the rewards that come with hard work.

What would you say about Special Olympics to encourage someone to get involved?

Come and volunteer once. I guarantee you will be hooked.
