Let the Games Begin!
Special Olympics athletes were in peak preparation mode today taking in the final day for practice before the games officially begin. Their enthusiasm, focus and excitement were felt by everyone in the city of St. Albert today.

THE BOLD:

  • Special Olympics athletes were in peak preparation mode today taking in the final day for practice before the games officially begin. Their enthusiasm, focus and excitement were felt by everyone in the city of St. Albert today.
  • The turnout from St. Albert and Edmonton media was simply incredible. Every major outlet across print, radio and TV brought a story to life bringing compelling awareness of the athletes, the games and the movement.
    • A special mention to Dan MacLennan, Sharon Bollenbach and Serge Boulianne who represented the Special Olympics family on-air with aplomb.

THE GOLD:

  • The Opening Ceremonies were simply amazing. While ALL of the highlights are simply too numerous to note, here are few golden ones:
    • Our emcees, dignitaries, Games Olympic Committee and VIP speakers nearly brought the house down.
    • The entertainment – especially the “Good Buddies Blues Band” from Saskatchewan – did bring the house down.
    • The “Evolution Rhythmic and Martial Gymnastics” showcase from Special Olympics Edmonton was mesmerizing.
    • Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg officers rappelling down from the ceiling to hand off the “Torch of Hope” to SO Athlete Matthew Winter for the lighting of the Games cauldron was awe-inspiring.
    • Olympic Gold Medalist Jamie Sale officially declaring the 7th Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in St. Albert and Jasper, OPEN!

TOMORROW`S MUST-SEE:

  • All sports begin competition tomorrow (save Alpine Skiing in Jasper which will be practice) – and based on the energy in St. Albert tonight, the competition will be fierce!
