Highlights from Day 7 – August 1, 2015
- Jackie Barrett, veteran powerlifter from Newfoundland and Labrador closed out the final day of competition by setting four Special Olympics World Games records in the squat (277.5kg), dead lift (297.5kg), combination bench press and deadlift (420kg) and combination of all three lifts (squat, dead lift and bench press at 697.5kg). He won three gold and one silver, closing out the Games in style, as he was the final Team Canada competitor in action.
- The Grizzlies, Team Canada’s softball team snagged a bronze medal, with an 8-5 win over the team from Mexico. After dropping three runs in the top of the first, Team Canada rebounded to score 2, with a home run by Comox Valley’s Brad Hogan. Strong defensive play stymied Mexico’s chances through early innings and then Harrington came to the plate with bases loaded and put Team Canada up by two with his single.
- The athletics and swimming venues were packed with cheering fans as Team Canada delivered strong closing performances. Today’s six athletics medals included two matching gold medals for the men’s and women’s 4×400-metre relay teams and gold in long jump earned by Ontario’s Peter Snider. The swimming medals included a 1-2 finish for Magnus Batara of B.C. and Andrew Perez of Québec in 200-metre breaststroke, racing in the same division. This was Batara’s fourth gold medal of the Games.
