Highlights from Day 1 – July 26, 2015

  • The Opening Ceremony was a star-studded event with First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama, opening the Games and special performances by Stevie Wonder and Avril Lavigne, who sang her Special Olympics inspired song “Fly”
  • In addition to celebrity star power on the main stage, Canada’s own, Justin Beiber, was on hand to celebrate Team Canada and walk with them during the parade of athletes into the iconic coliseum
  • Day 1 of competition included Team Canada’s first medalists of the Games, Special Olympics athletics athlete Mandy Manzardo picked up a bronze medal in the 10,000-metre run. Mandy and athlete Maxime Duguay were the first Special Olympics Canada athletes to run the 10,000-metre event at the World level
  • Team Canada swimmer, Josh Low, became the first gold medalist of the Games with a win (and personal best!) in the 25-metre back stroke, with the team bringing a total of seven medals and a record eight personal-best times at the pool throughout the afternoon
  • Team Canada had a great first day of competition in eight of the 10 sports Team Canada will be participating in
