Opening ceremony will be held on July 7 at 7 p.m. at the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede Fieldhouse. This event is free and open to the public. The sport venues for the summer games are Panorama Bowling Lanes, Crescent Heights High School, Family Leisure Centre, Connaught Golf Club and Medicine Hat Golf & Country Club. Closing ceremony will be held on July 9 at the Family Leisure Centre Kinsmen Plaza on July 9 at 2:30 p.m.

“Special Olympics has helped me meet new people and compete at a level I never thought was possible.”- Andrew Chamczuk, Special Olympics athlete from Spruce Grove.

Medicine Hat has a proud history of Special Olympics. It has been over 20 years since Medicine Hat hosted a Special Olympics Alberta Games. Their pride as host city is evident with the creation of the games logo by 14 year old Bailey McCann from Medicine Hat which incorporates the Finlay Bridge and the sun.

“A bridge also symbolizes travel and journey, as well as connection, which I think athletes and anybody associated with the Games has experienced,” said McCann.
“It also features the sun, because Medicine Hat is the sunniest city in Canada … A sun symbolizes power, growth and health. I chose to incorporate it because I believe each athlete, or anyone associated, has had power, growth or health.”

A momentous event like the 2017 Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games is driven by the dedicated people of the city from the Games Organizing Committee (GOC), volunteers and local sponsors. For full details for the Summer Games, go to www.medicinehat2017.ca
